Dana Elaine Owens - better than the general public by the name of Queen Latifah, is an American actress, rapper and acrobat. Queen Latifah is an American rapper, actress and performer. Queen Latifah grew up in Newark, New Jersey. She is the daughter of Rita Owens, Sr. and Lancelot Owens Jr. Latifah's parents divorced at the age of 10. Latifah was a student at a Catholic school, and she was educated within Newark New Jersey. She was a member of the Baptist church. Her stage name Latifah meaning delicate and very gentle in Arabic was handed by her cousin when she was only eight. Latifah's 5'10" height made her a powerful forward in high school. in a school show, she sang Home from The Wiz. Latifah was a member of Ladies Fresh, a rap group that launched her career in beatboxing. Latifah became part of in the Flavor Unit in its original model, consisting of a team of MCs with producer DJ Mark The 45 King. Mark James aka the DJ Mark the 40 King recorded a demo of the rap Princess of the Posse by Queen Latifah. The song was recorded and given to Yo! MTV Raps, Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was intrigued by the track. He signed Latifah and then released her first single Wrath of My Madness in 1988.
